CATACOMBS

Under your feet, in the south of Paris, hides an inextricable network of ancient stone quarries filled with skeletons: the Catacombs. To save the streets of Paris from caving in, the old quarries were stabilized in the 18th and 19th centuries and filled with the bones of the cemeteries of ancient Paris. The skulls of many famous or anonymous Parisians are exposed in these galleries. If you are not afraid, let’s go on this adventure that will teach you so much about the history of Paris. Your guide will also take you to visit some reserved galleries.

Montmartre

Montmartre is one of the last villages of Paris, perched on a hilltop overlooking the capital. Its small houses still preserved tell us the history, sometimes tragic, of Paris. Through its streets, with their Parisian charm and romanticism, we still come across, as in the past, famous or unknown artists and above all so many beautiful churches: the Saint-Jean-de-Montmartre church, one of the first reinforced concrete churches in Paris, the Saint-Pierre-de-Montmartre church, which is almost one thousand years old, and above all the Sacré-Coeur which dominates Paris with its grace.

COVERED PASSAGES

If there are places that transport us to the romantic period of the 19th century, they are the covered passages of Paris. These are the true ancestors of contemporary shopping malls and are now emblems of an authentic and delectably antiquated Paris. The fashion was begun with the galleries of the Palais Royal in the 18th century, but it was in the next century that the fashion reached its apex, with masterpieces such as the Vivienne or Colbert galleries still intact. Your private guide will provide you with more than just a tour: he will take you on a passage through time.

THE ALBERT-KAHN GARDEN

Albert Kahn, a passionate gardener born in 1860, was also a pacifist who never ceased to support the search for universal peace through multiple actions. According to him, this required a better knowledge of the diversity of cultures for a better understanding between nations. Hence the creation by this rich banker in his house in Boulogne Billancourt of a “scene park”, a very particular genre in the 19th century.  Each scene is a reference to a style of garden design: “regular” for the French garden, “landscape” for the English garden, “Japanese” for the Japanese garden or “sylvan” for the Vosges forest, evoking his native landscape. Very different atmospheres are created with plant species from the four corners of the world. The whole, which we will discover while strolling quietly in this park of 4 hectares registered in the inventory of historical monuments, symbolizes this world in peace dreamed by Albert Kahn. An exceptional testimony of horticultural art at the turn of the 20th century!

The Eiffel Tower will reveal hidden talents and Marie Curie will revolutionize surgery when the emptied palaces are transformed into makeshift hospitals. This tour proposes to explore the places that witnessed the extraordinary civil mobilization to serve those at the Front, but also to imagine the daily life of these Parisian women who took up the challenge of replacing men when others, like Gabrielle Chanel, were already imagining an active woman’s silhouette.
